The Right Skirt for Fall 2019

When the weather turns cool, it doesn’t mean an automatic return to wearing pants. There are many skirts (and boots) that are perfect for the fall. This season, we are still loving midi skirts, but there is the addition of the mini, maxi, A-lined, tulle and high-waisted skirts. They have come a long way from the long skirts of the 1800s that emphasized only the waist. It wasn’t until the 20th century when the skirt started to take the modern shape. In the 1950s, we saw skirts that rose to ankle-length. In the 1960s, we saw the birth of the mini skirt, which is a classic piece. In the next decade, the maxi dress was very long and popular. Today, we still wear these styles and have put twists on them with different patterns and colors. Let’s take a look at some of the fall trends in skirts.

1. Tulle — Tulle isn’t just for weddings anymore. It’s now used for short skirts that add an air of playfulness to any look. You can wear it to dinner or to a formal event. For a “seamless” look, pair it tights and high heels of the same color.
2. Midi — The hemline of these skirts falls below the knee. It’s very versatile in that you can wear ankle boots, heels, tall boots and sandals. This year, they are appearing in many styles (e.g. pleats) and colors.
3. High-rise — Like high-rise (Mom) jeans, these skirts are back. They have a high waist that is very flattering, no matter your shape. They have been popping up in different lengths (e.g. midi) and styles (e.g. wrap). There is even a high-rise short long skirt, that has a short front and long back.
4. Mini — The mini skirt is a piece that will never go out of style. From a range of colors and fabrics, the mini was made to emphasize legs. The leather mini skirt is sleek while giving off the “rebel” vibe.
5. Patterns & Colors — Aside from the styles, patterns are also making a statement. Geometric shapes of the seventies (e.g. chevron) add personality to any outfit. Flowers are always in bloom, whether on a maxi or high-rise skirt. Colors are another way to show your personality. Bold blues, yellows and greens are fun colors and easy to pair with sweaters or jean jackets.
6. Maxi — Like the dress, the maxi skirt is here to stay. The long length is perfect for sneakers and sandals. New versions of the skirt include a high waist and pleats.
