Savanna Greywind, Pregnant North Dakota Woman Who Was Missing, Found Dead

The woman was last seen Aug. 19 and was eight months pregnant at the time of her disappearance.

FARGO, ND — Authorities recovered the body of 22-year-old Savanna Greywind on Sunday, just days after a newborn, believed to be Greywind's child, was found in her neighbor's apartment, police said. Greywind was last seen on Aug. 19 and was eight months pregnant at the time.

An extensive search mission was carried out to find Greywind. Fargo Police Chief David Todd made the announcement late Sunday night on the Minnesota side of the river.

Greywind's body was found by kayakers on the Red River, heavily wrapped in plastic and duct tape that was stuck against a tree, Fargo Police Chief David Todd told reporters at a press conference. A search party found some suspicious material at a nearby farmstead, and Todd said investigators believe the farmstead may be a crime scene. The Clay County Sheriff's Office has secured the scene of the farmstead, which authorities said was abandoned.

Todd offered his condolences to Greywind's family and said the young woman was a "victim of a cruel and vicious act of depravity."

Greywind, 22, was reported missing on Aug. 19 by her family. She was last seen around 1:30 p.m. According to police, Greywind went to a neighboring apartment in the same building where she lives to assist her neighbor with a sewing project.

Police interviewed the tenants of the apartment Greywind visited, 32-year-old William Henry Hoehn and 38-year-old Brooke Lynn Crews. Crews told police Greywind left the apartment after helping her with the sewing project. After multiple consent searches of the apartment, at around 2 p.m. Thursday, officers executed a search warrant of the apartment of Crews and Hoehn.

Crews was home at the time of the search, and a newborn infant was also in the apartment, police said. The baby is at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Fargo under the custody of Cass County Social Services, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Police have not determined the parentage of the baby and Greywind's body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Ramsey County.

"The infant was alive and was immediately taken to a medical facility," police said in a news release at the time the infant was found. "Our investigation thus far indicates the probability that this is Savanna Greywind’s child."

Hoehn and Crews were detained and brought to the police department. As further information was developed and information obtained, Hoehn and Crews were both arrested and charged with class A felony conspiracy to commit kidnapping, police said. On Monday, authorities said the two were also charged with conspiracy to commit murder, a charge that carries a sentence of life in prison without parole.
