health and fitness

GirlTrek has added another team to its movement, and this time it is in Kent, Ohio.

Girl Trek is a national nonprofit organization that encourages African American women and girls to walk for healing within, and for the community. Founded by two women, the organization has a goal of 1 million walkers by 2018.

The Walks of Sunshine meet every Sunday at various locations. Team Leader Thurayya UmBayemake, who graduated from Roosevelt High in 2004, wanted to start this group after reading the health statistics of black women posted on GirlTrek.org.

Just wrapping up their #WeAreHarriet celebration weekend (March 10-12), teams all over the nation gave tribute to Hero Harriet Tubman. The celebration had a kick-off party on Friday, and planned #WeAreHarriet walks. The Walks of Sunshine decided to have their walk at the McKinley Memorial in remembrance of how far African Americans have come.

The Walks of Sunshine can be found on Facebook for anyone who wants to join. The team is currently having a fundraising at www.gofundme.com/rayyasunshine
