LAKEWOOD, OH — The Lakewood Schools released their fall reopening plan on Wednesday.

The district's reopening will be tied directly to the state's color-coded COVID-19 alert system for counties. If the virus' spread worsens in Cuyahoga County, the district will gradually move toward remote learning.

Here's what the district's reopening plan will look like:

  • If Cuyahoga County is at Level 1 (yellow rating) the district will use the "All in" model — Students will be in school five days a week, following safety protocols and spaced 3 feet apart at all times
  • Level 2 and Level 3 (orange and red) the district will use the "Partial" model — Students will be in school every other day
    • Attendance will be based on a student's last name (students with last names beginning with letters A-K in school one day, students with last names beginning with letters L-Z in school the next day)
  • Level 4 (purple) rating — All students will have remote learning

Cuyahoga County is currently at Level 3, meaning there is a "very high" rate of COVID-19 spread locally.

Face coverings will always be required for all students, except preschoolers, and staff at all school buildings. Everyone should complete a health assessment, including a temperature check, before entering a school building.

"We will use CDC recommended disinfectants to clean, and we will increase the frequency of cleaning, especially in high traffic areas. Our cleaning protocols include wiping of surfaces in common spaces throughout the school day, disinfecting classrooms in an ongoing manner and implementing a targeted cleaning routine in the evening," the district said on its website.

Details on safety protocols and how each phase of education would work can be found in a report posted on the district's website.

Families can also choose to participate in a full semester of online-only coursework. The eLearning Lakewood plan will keep students out of school buildings through at least the first semester, which concludes in December.

Meals will still be available to families even if students are not physically in school buildings.

"Our Nutrition Department will operate a Grab & Go Meal program like we did in the spring. Families in need will have the opportunity to receive meals for their school age students. More details will be shared closer to the start of the school," the district said.
