Marietta has had a historically strong German population. By the 1890s there was even some "social friction" between Germans and non-Germans. There was some issue at a city council meeting about possible discrimination against German women from The Women's Home. The manager assured the council that they didn't discriminate. There had been some reports of Ku Klux Klan activity against German Catholics near Watertown, but it appears this likely had to do more with religion than ethnic heritage. World War I sparked some anti-German sentiment in Marietta. Local papers worked hard to remind folks that Marietta Germans were still loyal citizens, and Mariettans of German heritage worked hard to prove that. The German Methodist Church stopped doing sermons in German, and public schools quit teaching German.
