World War II rocked Marietta. Women had to step up and do jobs traditionally done by men due to a labor shortage. Broughton Dairy Farm had to close some stores because they couldn't get enough people to run them. In 1944 there were numerous complaints by people because the hometown newspaper was running ads for out-of-town companies.
Marietta College was in such a deficit after Pearl Harbor, they had to get creative. They were able to save the university from financial ruin by persuading the U.S. Army Air Corps to assign some preflight training units to the school. The airmen were housed separately and taught subjects to assist with their flying duties, math, physics, geography, English, and physical training. Concerted efforts were made to keep young local women away from the airmen, these efforts weren't always successful.
