Marietta fun fact of the day:
There has always been some religious tension in Marietta, but it really reared its ugly head after World War I. The Ku Klux Klan had a bit of a revival in Marietta in the 1920s (as it did in many parts of the country). There had been rumors about the Klan since the mid 1890s, but on February 24, 1923 there was a cross burning on Harmar Hill. Before the cross was burned, a dynamite charge was blasted in an abandoned stone quarry, to get attention. A few nights later, robed Klansmen entered the Methodist Church, made a donation, then spoke with the pastor about "real Americanism." Klan activities in Marietta were mostly anti-Catholic, but also anti-Semitic as well. The cross burnings came at a time where there was particular tension between Protestants and Catholics in town.
