In 1829, 125 Mariettans including a number of very prominent ones like Ephraim Cutler, Douglas Putnam, and Samuel Shipman formed the Marietta Society for the Promotion of Temperance. The idea was never to get rid of alcohol (it's well known how much Marietta has always liked its booze), but to promote moderate drinking. It worked a little bit at first. But in the 1830s the movement faded. It came back with a vengeance in 1941 with the Washington County Temperance Society led by Douglas Putnam and William Parker Cutler. They called for total abstinence from alcohol saying that drink was inconsistent with morality, patriotism, and religion. They got about 2,000 people in just over a year to pledge to completely abstain from alcohol. The movement waxed and waned over the next few decades.
