World War II drastically changed life in Marietta, and quick. In March 1941, there was a youthful rebellion at Marietta College. The Marietta Times reported that about 100 students marched down Putnam Street to rebel against a new policy prohibiting them from going to liquor joints. Some of them were goose-stepping. These issues got resolved, but things got put into perspective later that year when WWII got real for America. The mobilization for war drove attendance for Marietta College from 430 in 1941, to 257 in 1942, and 143 in 1943. It drove the deficit up sharply for the college but solved a lot of problems caused by the Great Depression.
