Marietta fun fact of the day:

A large percentage of early business done in Marietta was through trade. Furs and salts were some of the most valuable things to have for a number of years here. Before they started making salt on the Muskingum, it was brought in on pack horses and sold for $8 a bushel. Furs varied, in 1796 the cost of a raccoon fur was 2 shillings, a musk-rat was 1 shilling, wildcat was 3 shillings, fox 2-4 shillings, and otter 3 shillings. The monetary terms of early American business are confusing because in 1786 the English pound system was abolished. But over the next couple of decades, many businesses used a combination of American and English monetary terms in their bookkeeping.
