In total, 123 scholarships were presented to students. Total Valuation of the awards was $190,500, a figure that represents a 35-percent increase from last Spring. The growth includes eight new full scholarships from the Morris Charitable Trust Scholarship, the Parmer Family Stepping Stone Scholarship, the Eramet Marietta, Inc. Employee Family Scholarship, and the P.J. Lee Memorial Scholarship.

“Last year, as the pandemic bared down on our community, it was evident that we would have more students who would need the support of the Foundation in order to pursue their dream of a college education. The ability of the Foundation to expand this critical support was only possible because of the generosity of our donors,” said WSCC President Dr. Vicky Wood. “Their benevolence is a testament to their understanding that education changes lives and provides for more prosperous futures.”

Traditionally, the Foundation hosts a scholarship reception that connects donors with scholarship recipients. For the second consecutive year however, the event was canceled due to the pandemic. Students, eager to express their gratitude to donors, are submitting pictures of themselves holding a thank you sign along with heartfelt handwritten notes of appreciation to the Foundation which will be forwarded along to the individual donors who made the scholarship possible.

“Thank you so much! Nursing has been hard but incredibly rewarding and this helps so much,” read the message from Associate Degree Nursing student Elizabeth Huffman. She received the Tim and Jane O’Brien Nursing Scholarship.

Emily Buttermore, recipient of the Morris Charitable Trust Scholarship wrote, “I do not think I can ever put into words how thankful I am for receiving this scholarship, but…Thank you, thank you, thank you!” “Because of this scholarship, I have gone from stressing about money every day to being able to breathe again and enjoy my life.”
