Change in Library Plans Could Cost Mayfield Village $100,000

When a development agreement was drafted for the new , officials planned for a short road from SOM Center.

Instead, a longer access road, which will be across from Hickory Hill Drive, was presented by the library and will cost an estimated $175,000, or about $100,000 more than originally expected. The design is still subject to Planning Commission approval.

Based on the additional expense and the potential need for a traffic light, Councilman William Marquardt voted Monday against amending the development agreement.

"These substantial improvements were not brought to council for approval," Marquardt said.

Although Marquardt cast the only vote against the amendment, Councilman Nicholas Delguyd also expressed concern.

"In my opinion that extra cost should really be on the county library because they're the ones who changed the plans," Delguyd said.

Assistant Law Director Diane Calta said she has talked to an attorney for the library about paying the added expense.

Bids for the entire library project, expected to cost $12 million to $13 million, are expected by the end of the week, according to Tina Belz, project manager with URS.

Council President William Buckholtz said that represents a substantial investment in the village. He added that the library road would also provide access to any development on land the village owns that was intended to serve as a third campus.

If that property is developed, taxes from the project can be used to pay for infrastructure improvements such as the access road and a traffic light, he said.
