City Council Reverses Decision on Landerhaven Sign

Lighting will be allowed.

The new sign over the canopy at Landerhaven will be illuminated after all.

Landerhaven owner Harlan Diamond was back before City Council on Monday to ask for reconsideration of back lighting of 2-foot letters spelling "Landerhaven" on the canopy by the front entrance of the catering and event business.

At its last meeting, council voted 4-2 against confirming a Board of Zoning Appeals decision to deny a variance for lighting. While that meant a majority of council members were in favor of lighting, five votes are needed to reverse BZA decisions.

With all seven council members in attendance Monday, the vote was 5-2 and Diamond's variance request was approved.

Lee Rodenfels of Brilliant Electric Sign Co. had argued the case on behalf of Diamond, telling council that Landerhaven's situation is different compared to other occupants of the office park.

"It's unique from other properties in this zoning district," he said. "They are operating in the evening and at times closing after midnight."

"It's very gentle lighting and shouldn't be a problem for anybody in the community," Diamond added.
