Gilmour Academy Athletes Sign on With Colleges

Four students, including Marissa Cangelosi of Highland Heights, will be playing sports at colleges next fall.

Cangelosi, Duncan DeFino of Lyndhurst, Julie Parker of Bellingham, WA, and Carolyn Curran of University Heights signed NCAA letters of intent Wednesday at the Gilmour Academy Athletic Center.

A third baseman on the softball team, Cangelosi will be attending Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV.

"They have a phenomenal nursing program," she said. Cangelosi also liked the small school atmosphere.

"There's such a community there. You feel like a family," said Cangelosi, who had her dad, Jerry, and mom, Sue, with her at the signing.

Cangelosi made Honor Roll six out of seven semesters and is involved in two service programs, the Measles Initiative and Tobit Ministry, in addition to playing softball and varsity soccer.

DeFino plans to study business while playing on the golf team at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. The captain of a Gilmour team that finished sixth in the state tournament also is part of the Yearbook, SADD and Environmental Club.

Parker will play hockey for Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Although she only played 24 games this year due to a knee injury, she had eight goals and eight assists. She also earned the Headmaster's Award for Academic Excellence, English Department Award and Stonehill College Book Award.

Curran will join former volleyball teammate Brittany Link at Brown University in Providence, RI. She was drawn by the volleyball and engineering programs. This year, she earned the Ohio High School Student Athlete Award and was named to the District All-Star team.
