Hillcrest Hospital Gets 'A' Safety Grade

MAYFIELD, OH - Hillcrest Hospital got the highest grade possible in a recent report released by nonprofit the Leapfrog Group, which is made up of hospital employers and healthcare providers. Hillcrest received an A grade.

To come up with the grades, Leapfrog looks at medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections. The goal is to determine what a patient's risk of further injury or infection is if they visit a certain hospital.

While the report said Hillcrest needs to improve its MRSA infection and C.Diff infection rates, but the hospital got a good grade in its blood infections in the ICU, urinary tract infections in the ICU, and surgical site infection after colon surgery rates.

Hillcrest also needs to improve the number of dangerous objects that are left in patients post-survery. The Hillcrest rate for dangerous leftover objects is .137. The average hospital score is .025 and the worst recorded hospital score was .386.

Hillcrest's best performance in a category was in Safety Problem, where the hospital had good ratings in every tracked measure. For example, in the Dangerous Bed Sores category, Hillcrest scored a .19. The average hospital scored .44 in Dangerous Bed Sores rates.

According to the organization, more than 1,000 Americans die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals.

Ohio is the 13th best state for hospital safety, according to Leapfrog. Of the 112 Ohio hospitals that were rated, 49 received an A. Roughly 44 percent of Ohio hospitals received an A grade. Only one hospital in Ohio got an F grade, the worst possible. Mercy Regional Medical Center of Lorain
