Mayfield Village Officials Review Committees
Beautification Committee to no longer be formally set in law

Mayfield Village officials plan to repeal the ordinance that established the Beautification Committee. But committee members needn't worry, the group will continue.
Council President William Buckholtz said the committee, run by Councilman Joseph Saponaro, was created about four years ago as an official committee but would be better off not having its structure restricted by law.
Buckholtz said the matter came to the attention of officials as part of an overall review of official and informal committees.

"All of these committees came out of necessity. A committee was created when SOM Center Road was widened," he said. "We put our law department to work and said, 'Let's look at these things.' All will stay. Structurally, it's a matter of how many representatives need to be there."
Regarding the Beautification Committee, when it was created one of its main functions was to organize decorative baskets placed throughout the village. The service department handles much of that function now, said Assistant Law Director Diane Calta.

In addition to floral selection for the baskets, the committee also operates an annual poster contest for students based on a theme such as keeping the community clean.
