RTA Improves Service Along Mayfield Road

Route 9 among 21 to have increased service starting on Sunday.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority has announced a 4 percent increase in service starting Sunday along 21 routes, including Route 9 on Mayfield Road, which runs from University Circle to SOM Center Road.

While some of those 21 routes will have additional scheduled runs, the new schedule isn't much different for Mayfield service. The improvement will come in the form of additional buses sent out when there is a delay due to weather or an accident.

"We're adding a few extra buses so if there are any delays we have buses on standby," said Mary M. McCahon, RTA media relations manager. "If there's an accident and you just missed a bus, instead of waiting 20 minutes you could be waiting 30 minutes. We'll backfill a bus. We're working on improving on-time performance."

McCahon said adjustments are made quarterly and the service changes made now will be reviewed to determine what worked and what's needed.

According to a press release from RTA CEO and General Manager Joe Calabrese, the improvements were made possible by increased ridership and sales tax revenues and will decrease overcrowding and offer needed services to customers.

One major change will be increased service on the HealthLine, formerly known as the Euclid Corridor, which will run every eight minutes during peak times rather than every 10 minutes.
