Auto Crimes Spiking In Onaway Neighborhood

Shaker Heights police are offering tips to protect residents and their vehicles.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Police say there has been an uptick in car-related crimes in the Onaway Neighborhood of Shaker Heights.

Every year, as temperatures start to gradually warm and the winter fades to blue skies, there is a corresponding uptick in crime. Police departments throughout Northeast Ohio regularly warn residents to take extra precaution in the warmer months to protect their valuables.

Shaker Heights police are asking residents in Onaway and across the city to follow some simple safety tips.

  • Always lock a car's doors, especially when you have to leave the vehicle for any length of time.
  • Make sure the car's alarm is enabled, if possible.
  • Park in a garage or a driveway.
  • Leave a light on that illuminates the driveway and makes it easier to spot persons up to no good.
  • Install motion lights near your home's garage, or wherever you park your vehicle.
  • Make sure your garage's doors and windows are locked, especially overnight.

"Please help us deter criminals, and protect your personal belongings by following some of these prevention tips," Shaker Heights police said on Facebook.
