COVID-19 In Shaker Heights: ZIP Code Update

Shaker Heights has seen an increase in COVID-19 cases locally since December.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — There have more than 2,200 COVID-19 cases associated with a Shaker Heights ZIP code, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The 4418 ZIP Code has been home to 2,202 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. That's up from 1,808 in mid-December.

Two other ZIP codes which stretch into Shaker Heights have seen similar case totals since the pandemic began. The 44120 ZIP code has had 1,611 confirmed COVID-19 cases among residents, while the 44122 ZIP code has had 1,935 COVID-19 cases.

Cuyahoga County has been one of the counties hit hardest by COVID-19 during the pandemic, with more than 73,000 confirmed cases among residents. More than 900 Cuyahoga County residents have died from COVID-19 complications since the pandemic began.

After seeing declining cases, Ohio saw a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations on Tuesday, the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) reported. Ohio's current COVID-19 hospitalization level is three times what it was on Nov. 1 and seven times what it was on Oct. 1.

"Our hospitals are extremely busy and we haven't yet begun to see what the impact may be from the holiday. We have a lot of road ahead and we can't forget COVID-19 safety," said Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, chief medical officer for ODH.

Approximately 1.5 percent of Ohioans have started the COVID-19 vaccine (nearly 175,000 people), according to the Ohio Department of Health. Vaccine distribution should begin for new groups of Ohioans in the next month or so, Gov. Mike DeWine indicated Tuesday.
