Longtime Shaker Heights Superintendent Says This Academic Year Will Be His Last

Longtime Shaker Heights Schools Superintendent Mark Freeman announced today, Sept. 4, that this academic year would be his last as the leader of the school district.

Freeman will step down once his contract ends July 31, 2013, according to a press release from the school district. He has been with the district for 24 years.

In a message to the Shaker schools staff and board of education, Freeman, 67, wrote, “I have been fortunate to work with supportive school boards and an active, positive, and engaged community. I have had the privilege of serving with a highly talented and committed staff. Above all, I have had the incredible pleasure of watching our students grow and thrive.”

School board President Annette Tucker Sutherland said in a media release that would begin this month to discuss the search strategy, which will include community input and consideration of internal and external candidates, for a new superintendent.

“From his start as a classroom teacher and through his leadership years, Dr. Freeman has touched the lives of thousands of students and educators,” Sutherland said. “During this final year of his impressive career, the Board asks that individuals in our staff and community join us in expressing appreciation to Dr. Freeman for his service and contributions to our District.”
