Rappel Down A Building And Four More Fun Things To Do This Week

Here's Five Things you need to know to get your week going in Shaker Heights.

It's Monday, and that means we've put together this list of things going on in Shaker Heights to help make your week a little brighter, easier and more fun. For a full list of things to do this week, look at the Patch calendar of events.

1. Become An Action Hero (For A Good Cause)!

Ever wanted to rappel down a building like an action hero?

Be The Match, a movement that strives to help patients who need a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant, is holding its Over The Edge event July 27 in which "edgers" who raise at least $1,000 will rappel down the 12-stories of the Tower East Building in Shaker Heights.

The event will take place July 27 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Tower East Office Building is located at 20600 Chagrin Boulevard.

2. Help Out In the Learning Garden

Did you know that Shaker Heights High School has a Learning Garden? And that you can help keep it maintained during the summer?

From Shaker Schools:

If you haven’t seen the courtyard garden at the High School lately, you’re missing a feast for the senses: fragrant lavender and roses share space with crisp cucumbers, ripening tomatoes, raspberries and blueberries, elegant Japanese shrubs, and African reed cane.

The garden’s lush plantings have provided abundant learning opportunities for Shaker students. Last spring, Onaway fourth-graders worked with high school students to plant potatoes and build bean trellises. Raised beds make it possible for students with disabilities to weed and water flowers, herbs, and vegetables.

Environmental science students and pre-vocational students have used the garden to learn about sustainable agriculture and nutrition, while art and photography students can find plenty of inspiration for their work.

Contact Stacey Steggert, special education department chair and coordinator of the High School Learning Garden, at steggert_s@shaker.org, to offer your services to help weed and water this summer.

The best part? Volunteers are welcome to enjoy anything that is ripe!

3. Build A Lego Dream House With Your Child

Who doesn't love Legos?

The Shaker Historical Society has a great event Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Layla Nelson, leader of the Lego Club at Fernway Elementary School, will guide children in building Lego Dream Houses! Kids will enjoy creating their Lego houses and be inspired by the city's fabulous houses.

It costs $5 per child. Call 216-921-1201 to register. Call quickly! Class size is limited.

4. Shaker Landmark Commission Meets

In city business, the Shaker Heights Landmark Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in City Hall's conference room B.

The commission's job is to "preserve, protect, and perpetuate buildings, structures, sites, works of art, and other objects having special historical, community or aesthetic interest or value."

5. Learn How To Make Your Job Search Super
