Shaker Library Celebrates Black History Month 2021

Shaker Library is proud to join in celebrating the Association for the Study of African American Life and History's (ASALH) 2021 Black History Month’s Theme The Black Family Representation, Identity, and Diversity with an exciting series of virtual programs for the family. 7-8:30 pm Wednesday, February 3: Black History Month Trivia Night. Can you name these famous Black families? Test your knowledge and join us for a competitive and fun night of Black history trivia moderated by Shaker Library's Community Engagement Specialist, Ali Black. One lucky winner will receive a small prize.

7-8:30 pm Wednesday, February 10: Sunday Dinner. Join Johnny Hutton for a discussion on food, family & tradition. Hutton, the owner of Zanzibar Soul Fusion, will discuss the history of the popular Black-owned restaurant and share personal stories about the role of food in his family. Participants will also walk away with tips on how to cook with love.

7-8:30 pm Wednesday, February 17: The Importance of Genealogy in the Black Family.Learn about the importance of genealogy. Dr. Deborah Abbott of the African American Genealogy Society of Cleveland will offer participants advice on how to trace family roots and discuss why genealogy holds particular significance in Black families.

7-8:30 pm Wednesday, February 24: The Camera in the Black Family. Join us for an artist talk with photographer Donald Black, Jr. as he ponders his relationship with the camera and his family. Black will talk about the importance of capturing Black family life in photography, share his work, and ruminate about the role of the camera in his personal family.
