Snow Removal Guidelines In Shaker Heights

SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Ahead of the first major snowstorm this season, Shaker Heights detailed how and when it uses road salt to clear motorways.

"Road salt directly impacts aquatic life when it runs off into local streams," the city said in a statement. "The city uses alternative de-icing techniques and sensible salting strategies so that the amount of road salt reaching local waterways is reduced."

Here's what that means in practice:

• Only major intersections are salted during snowstorms
• Salt is rarely used on secondary or side roads
• No salt is used between midnight and 4 a.m.

There will also be an automatic snow parking ban on residential streets if snowfall exceeds 2 inches.

Sidewalks must be cleared by residents by 9 a.m. the day after a major snowfall. If snow on the sidewalks reaches 6 inches, the city will plow the way clear, after streets are made safe.

Driveways are also the responsibility of residents.

A foot of snow, or more, could fall in parts of Northeast Ohio this week, the National Weather Service warned. Snowfall is expected to begin at 7 p.m. on Monday and continue through Wednesday morning.

"Heavy snow will be possible, especially for the primary and secondary snowbelts where greater than 12 inches will be possible. Gusty winds to 35 mph will be possible as well. Snow will diminish from west to east Tuesday through Wednesday," the National Weather Service said.
