Warrensville Center: Then & Now

Learn about the history of Warrensville Township and look at the current development of the Van Aken Center!

The Shaker Historical Society invites you to learn about the past, present and future of the Van Aken District in our current exhibit: “Warrensville Center: Then and Now” on display now until November 8th in our changing exhibit gallery.

The history of Warrensville Center is the history of Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, University Heights, Beachwood, Warrensville Heights, Newburgh Village and East View Village. All of these communities were carved out of Warrensville Township, Town 7, Range 11, which relates to the maps Moses Cleaveland drew of the Western Reserve of Ohio. When Daniel Warren came here in 1810, Warrensville Center quickly became the heart of the whole township, where residents from miles away would travel down Kinsman or Warrensville Center Road to meet, go to school, visit the doctor.., and enjoy a drink at a tavern. The City’s plans to develop it as the Van Aken District are underway, which has already redirected traffic.

What will the future hold for this development? Would the Van Sweringen brothers have approved of the changes to their residentially-zoned City? Discover for yourself, and let us know what your plans for the future of Warrensville Center would be!
