Pipe Bomb Blast Near Bixby Recruiting Center Not Treated As Terrorism: FBI

The FBI says investigators haven't identified a motive or suspect in the Monday explosion outside a recruiting station in Bixby.

TULSA, OK — A pipe bomb explosion outside an Air Force recruiting station near Tulsa is not being called an act of domestic terrorism because investigators haven't figured out a motive and have not identified a suspect, the FBI said.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives previously said agents were treating the late Monday blast in Bixby as a possible act of domestic terrorism out of "an abundance of caution," because of how close it was to the recruiting office.

The FBI will officially determine whether to call the incident terrorism, Special Agent Jessi Rice said Tuesday. A criminal investigation is ongoing into the use of an explosive device.(For more local news, click here to sign up for real-time news alerts. Agents are still looking for surveillance video for possible clues, Rice said.

Dale Barnett, the co-owner of Barnett Music Exchange near the recruiting station said he thinks "some disgruntled guy" is behind the blast.

Workers with a glass company arrived Tuesday and began to replace broken windows and a blown-out front door at the recruiting office.

No one was hurt.

The office is near small businesses, restaurants and financial planning firms. A movie theater is also nearby.
