Out of high school Liu initially seemed headed to the Golden State rather than the Golden Hurricane, signing a letter of intent with Los Angeles-based Pepperdine University.

At the time Pepperdine coach Laurie Gibbs had said: "Sammy has traveled the world competing in many of the top junior championships with excellent finishes. She is an experienced junior golfer that we believe will transition into college golf very well."
