The City of Hillsboro Discourages Fireworks this Fourth of July

Due to high fire danger, drought conditions, and extreme heat, the City of Hillsboro encourages our community members to find alternative ways to celebrate Independence Day this year.

With our community experiencing extreme heat, drought conditions, and increased risk of fire danger, the City of Hillsboro discourages the use of fireworks and encourages community members to find alternative ways to celebrate this Fourth of July holiday.

Consider attending a professional fireworks show, watching fireworks on your television or the internet, or enjoy a COVID-safe gathering free of fireworks.

This time of year typically brings an increased number of calls for emergency responders and dispatchers. The extreme heat has further increased that call volume and risk, especially for our most vulnerable community members. Please remember to only call 911 for emergencies.

Over the holiday weekend, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue will partner with the Hillsboro Police Department on enhanced safety patrols, as we have in many past years. We will be educating and informing community members about the risks associated with fireworks and how to use them safely. If illegal fireworks are encountered, they will be confiscated and destroyed.

Legal fireworks have been for sale in our community since June 23 and are legally allowed to be sold until July 6. We know that many organizations depend on the sale of fireworks for revenue and as fundraisers for community-based programs.

Fireworks Drop-Off

From July 1 through July 30, 2021, community members can drop off all types of unspent fireworks — legal or illegal — with no questions asked. Dropped off fireworks will be properly destroyed.

  • Fireworks must be dropped off during our business hours: 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Ring the doorbell to be greeted by one of our staff members.
  • Fireworks cannot be dropped off unattended. They must be physically handed to a staff member.

Drop-Off Locations

Main Fire Station 1
240 S. 1st Avenue
