Parents Eat Meth-Tainted Halloween Candy: Sheriff

Parents told Washington County Sheriff's deputies they ate a pack of their kids' Sour Patch Kids and began feeling sick.

ALOHA, OR — Parents collecting their annual Halloween candy tax got more than they expected when the Sour Patch Kids their children received whilst trick-or-treating turned out to be laced with methamphetamine.

The Aloha-area parents called the Washington County Sheriff's Office Thursday afternoon to report experiencing sickness after consuming the Sour Patch Kids candy the night before. According to the sheriff's office, the parents said the candy wrapper appeared fully sealed before they consumed the Sour Patch Kids.

The parents told officials they'd taken their two children out trick-or-treating in neighborhoods to the immediate northwest and south of their address in the 21600-block of Southwest Jay Street in Aloha.

Investigating deputies reportedly conducted a field test on the gummies, which came back positive for meth. The children did not consume any of the tainted candy, officials said.

Last year, in a neighborhood about one mile north, a Beaverton mom reported finding a small blade in her 13-year-old daughter's Halloween candy. Police were never able to confirm where the danger candy came from, but Washington County law enforcement is aware of the proximity of both incidents, WCSO spokesman Jef Talbot told Patch.

"As far as whether they're related, that would just be speculation at this point. There's just not enough info to link them," he said. "It's certainly on our minds as we conduct our investigation; and there's no reason to believe these are not credible concerns."

There have been no other reports of tainted Halloween candy in Washington County.
