WATCH: Grass Fire Creates Vortex of Flames (VIDEO)

it took nearly three dozen firefighters to bring a seven-acre blaze under control.

It took nearly three-dozen firefighters just over two hours to bring a seven-acre grass fire under control near Cornelius on Friday afternoon.

It broke out around 2:45 - fire officials think it as started by farming equipment that was cutting and processing the field at the time. They think that either a bearing seized or a rock was hit, causing a spark.

In total 7 acres of field burned (6 acres on original field and 1 acre on a spot fire field) near the intersection of Northwest Cornelius Schefflin Road and Northwest Verboort Road, no structures were damaged and no one was injured.

What transformed the fire from your every day grass fire into something more remarkable was that the conditions created a vortex of fire.

Firefighters were assisted by local farmers using disk equipment, which digs into the ground and flips the clean dirt over, removing anything that can burn.

The Cornelius Fire Department says the incident is a good reminder that with very high temperatures and very low humidity, fires can start and spread easily. Try to limit your activities outside until cooler weather returns to the area.
