Abington Adult School to Hold Open House

Students of the long-running adult school will show off their work at the Wednesday open house.

The Abington Township Adult School has offered classes to the community for the last 54 years. The classes offer a wide-variety of intellectual, artistic and self-improvement interests.

“We are committed to helping others achieve their creative ideas,” Wendy Kaye, assistant to the director at Abington Adult School, said in an e-mail.

The Abington Township Adult School will hold an open house, Wednesday, starting at 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Abington Senior High School, located at 900 Highland Ave.

“We have the open house so our students can ‘show off’ their talents,” Kaye said.

According to Kaye, students from this semester will be demonstrating their work at the open house, including:

  • Watercolor
  • Acrylic
  • Charcoal and Pastel
  • Woodcarving, Photography
  • Cake Decorating
  • Quilting
  • Sewing
  • Pottery
  • Jewelry making

According to the Abington Township Adult School website, classes generally fall into such categories as arts and crafts, computers, exercise and sports, finance, music and dance and self-improvement.

The Open House is a free event, and anyone is welcomed to find out more of the classes being offered at the school. According to Kaye, the classes offered are sometimes brought about by popular demand, although qualified teachers to lead those classes would also be necessary.

The classes are designed for students 18 years and older.

According to Kaye, some of the most popular classes have been:

  • Zumba
  • Yoga for Fitness
  • Retirement Planning Today
  • The Stock Market Class
  • Intro to Computers
  • Dances for Weddings

“In addition,” Kaye said. “New this year was our Emergency Preparedness class run by an Abington Township Police Officer and was free to the community, this was also popular.”

The Abington Adult School is tuition-based, however, there is no additional charge for students living outside the township.
