Historical Society To Discuss Willow Grove Park's History In Montco

ABINGTON, PA — Believe it or not, there was a time when Willow Grove Park was more than a mere suburban shopping destination.

In the beginning, the area actually served as an amusement park and community space where local residents would gather and spend time with family and friends.

The park, which lies in Abington Township just over the municipal line from Upper Moreland, first opened in the late 1890s and operated as an amusement park for the better part of 80 years, before it was closed in the early 1970s.

Then, in the early 1980s, the park was transformed into the shopping mall that we know today.

Community members and history buffs interested in learning about the history of Willow Grove Park is invited to an informative talk on April 28 at 7 p.m. at the Crestmont Park Clubhouse, located at 2595 Rubicam Avenue in the Willow Grove section of Abington Township.

Old York Road Historical Society President David Rowland is scheduled to present on the history of the park and its place in the community.

"Willow Grove Park was built in 1896 and set the standard for providing first-class entertainment and amusement to all who came," reads an Abington Township Facebook post announcing the upcoming program. "Come travel back to a time and place where life was a lark while at the Willow Grove Park."

The upcoming program is free and open to the public.
