ELKINS PARK, PA — Residents of an Eastern Montgomery County apartment building were told to evacuate their homes recently because of structural damage discovered at the complex, according to local news reports.

A recent report on 6 ABC stated that residents of the Regina Rose Apartments, located along Stahr Road in the Elkins Park section of Cheltenham Township, were told to immediately leave their apartments over fears that the building could collapse after township building officials discovered major structural issues with the flooring.

The township’s fire marshal, Scott Lynch, told 6 ABC Action News that the damage was discovered when fire officials responded to a report of a gas leak at the building in late June.

The damage was reportedly in the area of the floor joints, and the concern was that the improper structural construction could cause the building to collapse because of weight supporting issues, reports state.

The concern over the building’s structural integrity comes on the heels of the catastrophic Surfside condominium building collapse recently in southern Florida.

Cheltenham Township borders Abington Township in Eastern Montgomery County on one side and portions of Northwest Philadelphia on the other.

According to the Action News, the landlord for the building is being uncooperative with the township.

The building has been deemed unsafe for occupation and some residents told 6 ABC that they don’t have hope that they will ever be able to return to their apartments, while others are holding out hope that if repairs are ever made they will be able to come back.
