Jon Fox, 'Mr. Abington,' Former Congressman, Passes Away

"Mr. Abington," a former Abington Township Commissioner, state representative, and U.S. Congressman, has passed away.

ABINGTON, PA — A former Republican Congressman from Pennsylvania known for his ties to the Abington area died on Feb. 11 at the age of 70.

Jon D. Fox, also known as "Mr. Abington," was the U.S. Representative in Pennsylvania's 13th district from 1995 to 1999.

A graduate of Penn State and the former Delaware School of Law, Fox went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force reserve for eight years. His long career which followed left a lasting impact on the Abington area.

He worked as an assistant district attorney for years before becoming the Abington Township Commissioner for two terms, according to Abington police. He then went to become a state representative for Abington and Rockledge before being elected to Congress. His work helped establish the county's health department, the D.A.R.E. program, senior calling service, and more.

"Jon Fox will always be known for his generosity and love of people, his joy in helping them and his unwavering support of Police Officers everywhere. Former Chief of Police, Bill Kelly described Jon as “Truly one of the greatest public servants I have ever known”. Jon’s ability to bring everybody together and get things done will never be forgotten in Abington Township. Our department will miss him and never forget him! He left an indelible mark on Abington Township."

A memorial service is set for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Congregation Adath Jeshurun in Elkins Park.
