Longtime Principal Of Abington HS Dies At Age 87

Norman Schmid served the Abington School District for nearly three decades.

ABINGTON, PA — The former longtime principal of Abington Senior High School for nearly three decades, Norman Schmid, has died at age 87.

Schmid began teaching in 1956 before taking on the role of Abington's principal in 1969, remaining there through 1996, per a Philly.com obituary. School officials credit Schmid with helping Abington achieve much of its academic excellence, including the widely coveted Blue Ribbon rating in 1999.

The Norman W. Schmid Library Media Center at Abington is named after him. Schmid lobbied extensively for its construction.

He was also remembered as a valued mentor.

"His advice was wise, supportive, on-target, clear, and direct,” Superintendent Amy Sichel told Philly.com.

A native of Philadelphia's West Oak Lane section, Schmid served in the Army. He is survived by his two daughters, wife, two grandchildren, and sister.

Broad St., Phila., PA 19123.
