The Daily Meal considered nearly 1,000 pizzas and looked for such qualities as a nuanced sauce, well-distributed cheese, a flavorful crust, and an overall balance of ingredients.

The "101 Best Pizzas in America" list is culled from a preferred pool of perfect pies. The Daily Meal then reached out to a diverse list of pizza chefs, bloggers, critics and writers, and asked them to take a survey on the pizza shops where they actually had eaten.

Here's what The Daily Meal editors had to say about Pizzeria Vetri:

"Be sure to check off the Speck (smoky cured speck, pistachio pesto, balsamic, mozzarella, roasted cippolini onions and Parmigiano); the Gambaretto (rock shrimp, salsa verde, scallions and Parmigiano); and the Salciccia (fennel sausage, roasted fennel, tomato sauce and mozzarella). But don’t leave without trying the Rotolo, a crispy pizza dough pinwheel stuffed with house-made mortadella sausage and ricotta crowned with pistachio pesto."
