Joe Paterno Knew About Sandusky Abuse In 1976, New Documents Show

Court records unsealed Tuesday showed evidence that Joe Paterno and other PSU officials knew about the allegations against Jerry Sandusky.

New documents unsealed in the Jerry Sandusky case reveal that a 14-year-old-boy told Joe Paterno that Jerry Sandusky had molested him but that the Penn State coach did nothing about it, according to court documents.

The teen, who is now a man, said Paterno ignored him and said he was too busy with the football season to worry about his claims, according to court records unsealed Tuesday morning by Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Gary Glazer.

The unsealed documents are part of an insurance lawsuit which alleges that Paterno was aware of Sandusky's abuse. Sandusky was convicted in 2012.

The victim, identified as John Doe 150, made the allegations in his 2014 testimony, saying the incident occurred in the shower at a football camp in 1976, according to the documents.

“Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you, ‘I don’t want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about?'” the man’s lawyer asked him.

“Specifically. Yes … I was shocked, disappointed, offended. I was insulted… I said, is that all you’re going to do? You’re not going to do anything else?”

He later became one of dozens of Sandusky accusers that received millions in damages from Penn State.

Paterno's family continues to vigorously deny the attacks.

The documents also indicate further evidence that Penn State officials knew of the allegations against Sandusky in the 1970s and 80s and still did not report it.

Penn State President Eric Barron issued a statement on Penn State's website Tuesday addressing the documents.

"Although settlements have been reached, it also is important to reiterate that the alleged knowledge of former Penn State employees is not proven, and should not be treated as such," Barron wrote. "Some individuals deny the claims, and others are unable to defend themselves."

Barron pointed to a number of measures he said the university had enacted in order to fight child abuse, including additional training requirements for staff and updated policies.
