Snow, Sleet, And Closures As Abington Area Braces For More

Even more snow is on the way to the Abington area, as a snow emergency was put in place and local students enjoyed a traditional snow day.

ABINGTON, PA — Even more snow is on the way to the Abington area, as a snow emergency was put in place and local students enjoyed a traditional snow day.

Several inches of snow had already fallen around Montgomery County by early Monday morning, with totals ranging from just over three inches in some places, to closer to six in others, according to the National Weather Service.

Susquehanna Road between Valley Road and Huntingdon Road is closed until further notice, police said.

The Abington School District had no virtual classes Monday, citing a "potential for power outages." The meal distribution set for Monday was rescheduled for Tuesday morning.

The area above the I-276 corridor is expected to receive larger snow totals as Monday wears on into Tuesday, the Montgomery County Department of Public Safety said. Anywhere from four to 12 inches is possible.

Abington Township declared a snow emergency beginning at noon Sunday and running through noon on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Officials with Montgomery County said they began plowing once accumulation reached 2 to 3 inches.

Residents were urged to stay home and avoid vehicular travel.

"We need to keep our roads clear for emergency responders, healthcare staff, and other critical workers," a spokesperson for the county said.

Snow emergency routes in Abington include the entire roadways below:

  • Easton Road
  • Fox Chase Road
  • Highland Avenue
  • Huntingdon Pike
  • Meetinghouse Road
  • Moreland Road
  • Old Welsh Road
  • Old York Road
  • Susquehanna Road

The following partial roadways are also emergency routes that must be cleared of parked vehicles:

  • Edge Hill Road (Moreland Road to Old Welsh Road)
  • Jenkintown Road (North Hills Avenue to Highland Avenue
  • Mt. Carmel Avenue (North Hills Avenue to Highland Avenue)
  • North Hills Avenue (Fitzwatertown Road to Moreland Road)
  • Township Line Road (Old York Road to Fillmore Street)
  • Valley Road (Lower Moreland to Susquehanna Road)
  • Woodland Road (Easton Road to Fitzwatertown Road)
