You Can File Your State Taxes For Free With PA's New System

A new tax filing system launched by Pennsylvania allows residents to file their state taxes for free.

PENNSYLVANIA — A new tax filing system launched by the Department of Revenue allows residents to file their state taxes for free. Officials are recommending Pennsylvanians take advantage of the offering, which they say simplifies the tax process.

The program, called myPATH, can only be used for state taxes.

"We’re excited to offer a new online filing system that will make it easy for our customers to file their 2020 state returns for free," Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell said a statement. "We encourage all Pennsylvania taxpayers to take advantage of this new, easy-to-use option."

In addition to being free, myPATH allows users to track the status of their refund, get instant confirmation of a successful filing, and utilizes tools like error-reducing automatic calculators. They specifically cite the "Where's my PA personal income tax refund tool?" as being of use to taxpayers.

Income taxes can be filed beginning Feb. 12 this year, the date set by the IRS.

That's a later date than usual, and the delay in starting the tax season could lead to some delays for state returns and refunds, officials note.

The state also offers an online customer service center to help residents file taxes. It includes answers to hundreds of common questions, as well as access to a help line during business hours.

The final deadline is April 15.
