Upper Merion Pool Re-Opens After Temporary Closure

An inspection last week had uncovered problems with the electrical system, sanitation, plumbing and security.

The former Upper Merion Swim and Tennis Club community pool re-opened Saturday under the management of the township department of parks and recreation, after temporarily closing last week.

According to a statement from the township, the pool will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Labor Day, Sept. 7. The pool will also be open the following weekend, on Sept. 12 and 13. Any township resident who showed proper identification was allowed to use the fool for free over the weekend. However, prorated membership will go into effect as of today, officials said.

“After lengthy litigation between the township and its tenant, Upper Merion Swim and Tennis Club (UMSTC), the township regained possession of the pool on July 22, 2015,” read the township statement. “An immediate inspection of the facility revealed electrical, sanitary, security and plumbing deficiencies, some of which did not meet federal standards. The township immediately closed the pool so that the deficiencies could be corrected as soon as possible.”

The pool’s snack stand will not be in operation for the rest of the summer, but is expect to re-open in 2016. Residents are asked to bring their own food and beverages. Alcohol is prohibited.
