John Fish & Son Preps for Bryn Mawr Day

Owners of are looking foward to Bryn Mawr Day on Sept. 8, which will promote the activities of the day to complement the historical aspect of the Bryn Mawr 100.

John Fish & Son, founded in 1888, is the only business of the .

"There's so much interest now with the fact that —it's such a positive," third-generation owner David Fish said of Bryn Mawr's downtown. "It's nice to see some new interest in 'Main Street USA.' "

Fish said he sees some trends for new stores, adding the .

"Retailing continues to be a challenge because of the Internet and big-box stores," Fish said. "But as we have found, providing services is still important to our customers. We still do feel we're needed in the community."

The Sept. 8 celebration will promote sidewalk sales at downtown businesses and restaurants, along with the main celebration and circus at . John Fish & Son will have a table with historic photos at the library along with a sidewalk sale in front of the 1022 W. Lancaster Ave. store.

Though the shop doesn't offer discounts, there will be items regularly priced between $20 and $30 on sale for $18.88—for the store's founding year—at its sidewalk table on Bryn Mawr Day.

New this year, there will also be a contest: A glass fish will be filled with watch batteries, and whoever comes closest to guessing how many batteries are inside will win a $100 gift certificate to the store, Fish said.
