Legislation Banning LGBTQ Conversion Therapy Proposed In Philadelphia: Report

The bill would prevent licensed mental health providers from performing the therapy on anyone under 18, according to reports.

A Philadelphia councilman introduced a bill Thursday that would ban the controversial conversion therapy for anyone under 18 years old in the city.

Conversion therapy is used in attempts to change members of the LGBTQ community's sexual orientation.

Councilman Mark Squilla introduced the legislation, saying that conversion therapy puts "us back in time" due to the therapy largely considering LGBTQ sexual orientations a medical issue than can be cured, Philly.com reports.

If passed, the bill would ban using conversion therapy on anyone under 18 by anyone licensed as a mental health provider understate law, according to the outlet.

Philly.com said the bill would not affect therapy designed to support people who are transitioning to a different gender or support without the focus on changing sexual orientation.
