Delaware Valley Friends School in Paoli, Pennsylvania, welcomes Mildred Butler-Coleman to its Board of Trustees Mildred is a registered nurse by profession who has worked in the field of healthcare for over 30 years. Upon graduating from Eastern University where she earned her MS in Health Services Management, Mildred shifted from working in hospitals to working in long-term care and retirement communities. One of her first long term care positions was with a Quaker retirement community that was part of Friends Services for Aging. Mildred credits this experience, in addition to her service on the Friends Services for Aging Board of Directors, for introducing her to the Society of Friends and Quaker principles and practice for which she has a great deal of respect and appreciation. Mildred currently works for the state of Pennsylvania serving retired military vets in Southeastern Veterans Center in Spring City, PA. Mildred is active in community outreach through Bethel Baptist Church, where she is part of the Education Ministry working with children 5 - 18 years of age in Phoenixville, PA. She is also a parent volunteer with a non-profit program called YMWIC, INC. -- a STEM program that encourages young people of color to appreciate the Science, Math, and Technology fields. Mildred is a DVFS Alumni Parent – her son John graduated in 2018. Mildred says she agreed to be on the DVFS Board because of the experience her family had in trying to find a positive educational environment for her high school age son. “DVFS was the answer for our child, as he was struggling in the public school system we live in,” she shared. “DVFS has staff trained to teach to his strengths, and helped him learn to navigate around his areas of weakness. After my experience at DVFS and seeing his transformation, I want to assist in any way I can to make sure the future of DVFS is secure for other families whose children may have situations similar to our son's.” Mildred feels the lasting value of a DV education is that “DVFS helps students regain their confidence and find their natural gifts. Each graduate can go out into the world and make a positive difference in their small way. Together they will make a big impact!” Mildred is looking forward to serving on the Board in any way she is needed, but her specific experience is in the areas of diversity and compliance as well as properties and facilities.
