Philly Police Shoot, Kill Man Who Fired AK-47 Style Rifle At Cops

Police called the man a "deranged individual who was on a rampage" following the Germantown incident.

PHILADELPHIA — Police in Philadelphia shot and killed a man who was involved in a fatal carjacking then shot an AK-47-style rifle at police early Thursday morning in Germantown.

The incident unfolded at about 4 a.m. when the armed man went into Saint Luke's Episcopal Church on the 5400 block of Germantown Avenue where he shot at and missed an employee then stole her car keys before taking her car, NBC10 reports.

According to Action News, the 29-year-old man crashed the vehicle then attempted to carjack a woman, but was unsuccessful. He subsequently carjacked a 19-year-old woman, who was shot and killed in the incident, the outlet reports.

The man also crashed that vehicle then led a foot chase with police, during which he fired an AK-47-style rifle at police, Fox 29 reports.

Officers fired back, but missed, however they later shot the man after he refused to drop the gun.

He died a short time later at a hospital, NBC10 reports.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

A police spokesperson called the gunman a "deranged individual who was on a rampage."
