UPDATED: Cranberry Man Shot in Attempted Homicide After Road Incident Escalates

State police say victim is shot on Zehner School Road in Jackson Township after a highway dispute that began on Route 19.

State police are searching for a man who shot a Cranberry Township resident Friday night in what Jackson Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer said is a road rage incident.

David Getty, 45, of Cranberry is believed to have been shot twice around 11:30 p.m. after a dispute that began on Route 19, Seilhamer said. The chief said Getty received a superficial wound when a bullet grazed him. Another shot struck him near the ribs, he said.

Seilhamer said Jackson Township police were called to the scene on Zehner School Road after Getty and his girlfriend, who was not identified, drove themselves to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry. A UPMC spokeswoman on Saturday said no information is available on Getty’s condition.

“We responded to the report after they showed up at the hospital with a bullet wound,” Seilhamer said. “Our preliminary investigation showed it was a road rage incident.”

The chief said Jackson Township officers secured the area before turning the case over to state police.

According to troopers, Getty and his girlfriend were driving south on Route 19 in Jackson Township when they became involved in an altercation with the driver of another southbound car.

Getty turned off Route 19 and headed west on Zehner School Road. Troopers said he and his girlfriend believe the other car's driver made a U-turn and followed them. Getty told troopers he pulled over and then got out of his car and walked toward the other vehicle.

Investigators said Getty was shot when the man inside the other car fired several times at him.

The car is described as a light-colored sedan. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact state police in Butler at 724-284-8100.
