Classes are on Thursday in the Keystone Oaks School District after a teachers strike was narrowly averted.
The Keystone Oaks Education Association had filed notice to begin a work stoppage at 12:01 a.m. But the district and teachers reached a tentative agreement following marathon bargaining sessions over the past two days.
“We are pleased that the district and (association) were able to come to an agreement that is sustainable, fair and, above all else, puts the students first,” school board president Matt Cesario said. “We look forward to working with the teachers, counselors and nurses to continue to provide a high quality education for all Keystone Oaks students.”

The tentative agreement extends the current contract by one year and will expire on June 30, 2017. Additional details are expected to be released after the pact is ratified within the next two weeks.
The association represents 160 teachers, counselors and nurses who had been working without a contract since last June.

Although a strike was averted, students will not have school on Friday because of a pre-scheduled in-service day.
