Street's Bad Condition Makes It Hazardous, Say Neighbors: Report

A 6-year-old boy needed surgery after falling off his bike on Elmbank Street, says media report.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Residents who live along Elmbank Street in Brookline have gotten fed up with the street's poor condition, according to media reports. And their opinions of Elmbank reached a new low after a 6-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he fell off his bicycle and landed on a piece of exposed rebar in the street.

The boy required surgery, according to KDKA-TV CBS 2. The TV station reported Tuesday that the street is lined with cracks, potholes, chipped curbs and exposed concrete, with rebar sticking through in some places.

Neighbors said they've called the mayor's office about the situation, but no action has been taken so far this year.

The mayor's office says Elmbank is scheduled to be resurfaced, but the city's Public Works department has to repair some of the concrete slabs on the street before resurfacing can begin, KDKA reported.

The office of City Councilwoman Natalia Rudiak, who represents the neighborhood, said that repair crews ran into a problem with a private sewer line, which held up repaving. The sewer line was fixed by June 30, KDKA reported.
