Ardmore Avenue Bridge Work To Continue Next Week In Haverford

HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, PA — PennDOT said work on two bridges that carry Ardmore Avenue over Cobbs Creek and SEPTA’s Norristown High-Speed Line in Haverford will continue next week.

According to PennDOT, work on the bridge replacement project will start again on Monday.

Ardmore Avenue is still closed between Haverford Road and Golf House Road, and has been since July 2019. Ardmore Avenue is still detoured over Darby Road, College Avenue and Haverford Road.

Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

Normal highway and bridge construction projects in Pennsylvania remain paused as part of the commonwealth’s efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This project is part of critical work that continues statewide addressing safety needs and work needed to eliminate roadway restrictions that could impede the ability for the movement of life sustaining goods and services.

This transportation improvement project is driven by the need to replace both bridges that are rated in poor condition and improvements are needed to enhance the safety and operations of the two bridges because of their age, state of deterioration and the lack of adequate shoulders and approaches to the structures.

The bridge over Cobbs Creek was built in 1935, and the structure over SEPTA tracks dates back to 1927.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays will occur. Ardmore Avenue carries an annual average daily traffic volume of 11,700.

Under this project, PennDOT’s contractor will also reconstruct Ardmore Avenue between Golf House Road and Haverford Road to accommodate two four-foot-wide shoulders and two 12-foot-wide travel lanes.

The Norristown High Speed Line station will continue to remain in service throughout the length of the project and motorists will be able to access the Ardmore Avenue Station parking lot via Golf View Road.
