Mother, Son Charged After Delco Shooting

A 39-year-old mother and her 24-year-old son are facing numerous charges after a shooting in Darby earlier this week.

DARBY, PA — A mother and son have been charged in connection Delaware County shooting this week, authorities said.

District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer and Darby Borough Police Chief Joseph Gabe said Janell Smart, 39, and her son Dajuan Andrews, 24, were taken into custody and numerous firearms were seized at their home.

The two are charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and numerous firearms offenses

“On the evening of June 9, 2021, my officers responded to several 911 calls reporting gunshots fired in the vicinity of 230 Mulberry Street," Gabe said. "After a preliminary investigation and the recovery of ballistic evidence, we secured the location and obtained a search warrant for the defendants’ home. We seized several firearms and placed the two into custody. I want to thank my officers as well as assisting officers from the Sharon Hill Police Department."

"I want to commend the fast action and coordinated effort of the various law enforcement agencies that responded to the situation," Stollsteimer said. "The rapid collection of evidence in the waning hours of daylight pointed to the location where the shots originated, and allowed a potentially volatile situation to be defused before any injuries occurred. Not only were two dangerous suspects taken into custody, but several firearms were seized and taken off the streets, so they will no longer pose a threat to law abiding members of the community."

The mother and son are in custody on $250,000 cash bail each.
