No "Mallrats 2" Expected at Granite Run Mall

Due to snags, it's now unlikely Kevin Smith movie will film in Delaware County

So much for the hopes that a major motion picture would be filmed at the recently shuttered Granite Run Mall in Media.

Reports a few months ago hinted that director Kevin Smith was looking to shoot Mallrats 2, the sequel to his 1995 film, at Granite Run. However, a spokesman for the firm that owns the mall, told the Delaware County Times that “Mallrats” at Granite Run “ “doesn’t look likely” at this point.

Michael Markman, president of BET Investments, told the paper that “a snag with the movie people” was the reason why the shoot probably won’t happen. Granite Run Mall, the mall part of it anyway, may now go forward with a teardown later this year, the report said.

The word comes as the Philadelphia region is beginning to lose luster as a filming location. According a PhillyChitChat report earlier this week, a pair of films- Three Seconds and Equity- have backed out of plans to film locally this fall. The budget impasse in Harrisburg, which has put funding in jeopardy for film production tax credits, has been cited as a reason why.

Film Buff Online first reported earlier this year that Granite Run Mall was under consideration for Mallrats 2.
