'A Huge Impact': Lower Moreland Launches New K-9 Unit

The benefits of having a K-9 on the force are undeniable. Lower Moreland's Officer Sierra Volkert is up for the challenge.

LOWER MORELAND, PA — For the first time in their history, the Lower Moreland Township Police Department will have a K-9 unit.

Police officially launched the unit this week. It's something that's been in the works for a while, as the department searched for trained the right cop and the right dog after initially making the announcement back in November 2020. In Officer Sierra Volkert and K-9 Kermit, they're confident they've found the perfect duo.

“We’re both excited to get to work, meet members of the community, and keep proving a high level of service to Lower Moreland," Volkert said, according to the department.

Volkert, a graduate of the Reading City Police Academy, said she's grown up around dogs and that working with a k-9 was something she's always wanted to do. She completed the selection process test in January, the department said.

Kermit, an 18-month-old German Shepherd who was educated at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center at the University of Pennsylvania, will be a dual-purpose dog once his training is complete in October: he's certified both to search for explosives, narcotics, and missing persons, as well as interact with the public at community events, police said.

Kermit already has both a Facebook and Instagram account, and solidifying public relations with police will be an important part of his duties.

Donations are needed to help this program get off the ground. Funds will go to the purchase of a special vehicle outfitted for Kemit and Volkert, as well as leashes, harnesses, a kennel, food, treats, and more. Checks or cash can be sent to Lower Moreland Township Police, Attn: K9 Initiative, 640 Red Lion Road Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006.
